Medieval Monastery
Complete these sentences around your picture of a monastery on your photocopied worksheet. Write neatly in ink:

Church
A monastery church is called an abbey. It is in the form of a crucifix pointing eastwards. Seven services a day were held here.

Dormitory
Monks slept in this long room without any heating. They were woken just afetr midnight for the first service and descended the night stairs to the abbey.

Abbot's House
Since the abbot would have business to conduct with the outside world his house was set apart from the cloister.

Guest House
This is where pilgrims and other travellers could stay for the night. The Abbot had his own guest house for more important people.

Refectory
Meals were served in turn by the brothers. One of them read from a raised lectern. Monks eat in silence.

Bathrooms
The necessarium (WCs) and lavatorium (washroom) were over a river, usually downstream from the kitchens.

Chapter House
Here morning assembly took place. Jobs and punishments were given out. A chapter of St Benedict's Rule was read.

Infirmary
This was away from the cloister so that infection couldn't spread. It had a warm fire and its own chapel.

How to revise:
  • Read through the chapters in your notes and make sure you understand the subject.
  • On small 10X14cms note cards write the key vocabulary (ideas, themes, names, dates , places etc) .
  • Learn by heart the vocabulary.
  • Ask someone to test you

Some sections require short answers and some ask for longer explanations.

In pairs research these people and write paragraphs of your own on the following:

- Where they live
- Pastoral farming

- Huts & villages
- Appearance (costume, jewellery, hairstyles etc)
- Traditions, ceremonies and religious beliefs.

Work together : decide who does what and e-mail each other. Make it look as if only one person has worked on it.Use books and encyclopedias as well as the internet. Add pictures,diagrams and maps. Write a list of your sources of information.
Length: 4 sides (max) .
