England's Industrial Revolution in the 18th c

- Why the Ind Rev occured first in England

- Textiles from cottage production to factory production. Textle inventions.

- A new source of power : the steam engine.

- Importance of coal to power steam engines. Location of factories on coalfields.

- Map of the Ind Rev in 18th c Britain.

How to revise:
  • Read through the your photocopied notes and make sure you understand the subject. If you are interested look at other information on the subject.
  • On small 10X14cms note cards write the key vocabulary (ideas, themes, names, dates , places etc) .
  • Learn by heart the vocabulary.
  • Ask someone to test you.

Effects of the Railways

Work in pairs to produce a short (max 4 sides including pictures, maps etc) summary of the effects of the railways. Use clear paragraphs in your own words. Here are some ideas you could study:

  • Growth of industry (iron, coal, railway equipment,) and industrial towns.
  • Fresh foods transported to the city
  • Tourism and growth of seaside towns
  • Letters and mail
  • Decline of river, canal , coastal and horsedrawn transport.
  • Standardised time and clocks across the country.

Use books in library, internet, encyclopedias and photocopied worksheet. Note sources of information.
